Why is this role critical? The Patient Advocacy Paralegal assists the external law firms in monitoring and reviewing prelitigation files to determine the appropriate course of action with regard to balance bill defense and member advocacy.  


 A Day in the Life: As the Patient Advocacy Paralegal, you act as a liaison between the Legal Department, external law firms retained by ELAP, Member Services Advocates, and other internal departments within ELAP to support legal and compliance efforts. Your ability to multi-task and problem solve is essential as you manage multiple accounts for balance bill and debt collection efforts, work with attorneys to develop legal arguments, and respond to inquiries from Client and Member Services staff. With great attention to detail, you review hospital agreements, billing statements, explanation of benefits, plan documents, and other necessary records to prepare correspondence for attorney review and approval. In addition, you will handle inquiries from hospitals, debt collectors, and/or clients. 


 What will help me thrive in this role?  

  • 2-4 years of paralegal or legal secretary experience
  • Demonstrated skill in negotiating and resolving conflict
  • Extremely detail-oriented and possess the ability to prioritize workload. 
  • Excellent communication, judgment, and analytical skills. 
  • Debt collection experience and knowledge of FDCPA and other consumer protection laws is preferred. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Proficiency in Salesforce a plus.
