About the Role

The Discovery & Personalization team builds systems and algorithms that power consumer personalization across the Houzz consumer platform. We are looking for a senior machine learning engineer to join the Discovery & Personalization team and build the next gen marketing engine. We work very closely with the marketing org and this is an opportunity to change how marketing is practiced, by making engineering one of the core pillars of marketing.


What You’ll Do

  • Drive the agenda on how engineering can supercharge the practice of marketing

  • Make strategic decisions like building new systems that improve overall experimentation velocity and power long term growth 

  • Make tactical decisions like building real time cross channel budget optimization taking into consideration ad frequency optimization, channel response characteristics and message sequencing by uncovering insights about consumer behavior using sophisticated models

  • Drive real business value by executing on projects like Predictive modeling of spend by channel relative to (incremental) LTV, Propensity scoring users using something like the RFM model to allow us to better personalize and prioritize lifecycle campaigns , Product/Category level modeling to determine what product to prioritize in real time

  • Work across a variety of channels including Paid as well as email, push etc.

At a Minimum, We’d Like You to Have

  • Experience applying machine learning to build systems such as Search, Recommendation, Advertising, etc.

  • A deep understanding of business results and drivers - and associated approaches to drive impact along with a strong drive to influence business decisions and metrics.

  • Ability to effectively work with business leads: strong communication skills, ability to take output of experiments, data models and expert intuition and synthesize them into conclusions for non-experts 

  • Solid coding skills in a common programming language such as Python, Go, Java, PHP, C++

  • Proven ability to scale marketing, both within channels such as PLA and other channels

  • Independence, self-motivation and the drive to get stuff done

  • M.S., B.S. or Ph.D. (preferred) in Computer Science or related engineering disciplines

  • 5+ years full-time relevant industry experience

Ideally, You'll Also Have

  • Proven ecommerce expertise

  • Prior experience building scalable data processing pipelines with big data tools such as Hadoop, Hive, Spark, Luigi, Airflow, and Kubernetes
