Job Description

The Opportunity

We are hiring a Bioinformatics Sr. Scientist to join our rapidly growing R&D team and spearhead the development of the Systems Biology Group as well as the company’s overall data management platform. In this career-defining role, the individual will be instrumental in establishing and leading ZymoChem’s multi-omics pipeline to accelerate the data-driven understanding of the company’s proprietary metabolic pathways and production strains. The Bioinformatics Sr. Scientist will routinely interface with other R&D teams to formulate data-driven hypothesis, identify metabolism-related bottlenecks, and engineer solutions for optimizing strain & bioprocess performance. The ideal candidate will also be well-equipped to expand & oversee the company’s holistic, synthetic biology-focused data analytics infrastructure.


  • Establish the company’s bioinformatics pipeline consisting of metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolic modeling workflows

  • Lead the design, execution, and data analyses for multi-omics studies

  • Build and/or implement state-of-the art tools and techniques for metabolic modeling & analyses, enhanced statistical analyses, and results visualization

  • Create in-house software and/or implement existing technology for the company’s data management infrastructure and analytics platform

  • Develop biostatistics tools in combination with using modern data science techniques for designing experiments, evaluating data, and ranking microbial performance

  • Routinely interface with the company’s other R&D groups to inform/advise on future studies, simplify scientific questions, and facilitate experimental design in order to link outcome datasets to analytics strategies

  • Train scientists in other groups on the usage of data management tools to improve data utilization amongst the teams and to alleviate knowledge gaps with complex biological processes and metabolic pathways


  • PhD or MS in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related discipline

  • PhD with 3+ years (or MS degree with 6+ years) of industrial/startup experience in a bioinformatics role; prior work with a Systems Biology team is strongly preferred

  • Highly proficient with metabolomics & metabolic modeling; additional experience with other –omics workflows, 13C metabolic flux analysis, and bioinformatics software is a plus

  • Demonstrated expertise with developing and optimizing bioinformatics workflows in addition to prior exposure to metabolite sample preparation and state-of-the-art analytical tools

  • Solid knowledge base with microbial metabolism, transcription/translation, and physiology

  • Fluent in ≥1 scripting tool (e.g., Python, R) along with being able to effectively frame problems as programming tasks

  • Expertise creating new and/or implementing existing data visualization technology (e.g., Spotfire, JMP)

  • Familiarity with interfacing APIs with databases, as well as modern data science technology stacks and concepts

  • Demonstrated success working both individually and cross-disciplinarily to balance multiple independent experiments/projects

  • Scientific rigor toward continuous evaluation of experimental design, noise/variability, reproducibility, and outcomes
