The Role & The Team

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Data Science, we are seeking an exceptional Associate Director, Product Development Analytics to join our Data Science team based in our Redwood City office. This group implements and develops the newest methods for proteomics molecular profiling leveraging Seer’s proprietary technology platform and the latest generation of mass spectrometers. The driving focus of this team, working closely with the mass spectrometry, assay, material technology and product teams, is to extract value and insights from large scale datasets produced by Seer-technology. 


Seer’s new Associate Director, Product Development Analytics will lead and grow an existing team of data scientists assisting in the development and launch of Seer’s first products. The team will be working on verification & validation related projects, product development and customer collaborations by implementing and executing robust verification and validation data frameworks, performing exploratory data analysis, data wrangling, reporting, statistical analysis and complex modeling. The ideal candidate will have a track record of accomplishments in academia or in the life sciences/pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry. The successful candidate is likely to have a background in computer science, bioinformatics, molecular biology, or biochemistry with at least 5 years experience in life science product development and at least 2 years experience managing data science teams. This role requires superior skills in languages including Python and R, as well as a highly collaborative work ethic.


Responsibilities & Goals

The Data Science group is focused on processing and analyzing our large scale proteomics molecular profiling data using cloud scale tooling. Areas of specific responsibility and attention will include:

  • Execute on building robust verification and validation data frameworks, working closely with the product development team, to launch and iterate on products
  • Perform exploratory data analysis, data wrangling, reporting, statistical analysis and complex modeling. Use appropriate and succinct visualizations to convey insights to the wider team. Present analysis and results to the executive team
  • Lead, develop, grow and retain a team of star data scientists
  • Partner with data & software engineers to optimize the data pipelines for quantity, quality and product applicability – for both research and development lines
  • Carefully curate generated data sets, optimizing for traceability and ease of access
  • Stay current with developments in data science and internally promote new techniques/ideas
  • Interact with company leadership to develop Seer’s data science strategy
  • Work closely with the Mass Spectrometry, Assay, Materials Technology groups as well as interact, collaborate, and support other functional teams within the broader Seer Research, Development, and Clinical framework


Background & Qualifications

The successful candidate for the position of Associate Director, Product Development Analytics must have a demonstrated record of accomplishments in academia or the life sciences industry. The ideal candidate will have had significant experience in analyzing proteomic or genomic data and product development. Candidates must bring a strong entrepreneurial orientation along with teamwork skills and an absolute commitment to competing with the highest level of integrity. 


Key requirements include:

  • Masters of Science (or equivalent) in relevant discipline such as computer science, bioinformatics, molecular biology or biochemistry. PhD level preferred
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a leadership role with at least 5 years total experience (7+ preferred) in a life-sciences industry setting (biotech start-up experience preferred) with a focus on product development and launch
  • Experience with verification and validation industry best practices and standards
  • Superior Python or R skills in data analysis, statistics and machine learning. Comfortable in Jupyter/R-studio environments (experience in Domino Data Lab an advantage)
  • Familiarity of relational and non-relational databases. Good working SQL
  • Knowledge of mass spec proteomic data processing software (e.g. MaxQuant, OpenMS, EncyclopeDIA) or comparable genomic equivalents would be a distinct advantage
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated experience in cross-functional and timely communication
  • Strong and collaborative work ethic; must be a self-starter and persistent in achieving objectives to support Seer’s scientific and business goals
  • Must work well in a small team setting, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively, while meeting scheduled deadlines in a fast-paced environment
