About Ginkgo Bioworks

Headquartered in Boston, Ginkgo Bioworks uses the most advanced technology on the planet – biology – to grow products instead of manufacturing them. We design custom microbes for customers across multiple markets, and build our foundries to scale the process of organism engineering using software and hardware automation.

Job Description

We're looking for dedicated Laboratory Technicians to join our team and help grow our COVID-19 testing service, Concentric by Ginkgo. This effort is designed to provide broader access to COVID-19 diagnostic testing solutions, and is supported by partners such as Illumina and the National Institutes of Health - including one of the first awards under NIH’s Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) program.

We're inspired and heartened by the tremendous public health response to COVID-19, and recognize that a similar scale of effort is needed by the biotech community to find long-term solutions to this crisis.  Therefore, we’re building increased Foundry capacity to support high rates of testing frequency for our clients, offering an end-to-end, onsite testing service designed to test large communities of individuals.  Performed at high-scale and high-throughput, this additional testing capacity will be essential for organizations, institutions, and companies to be able to reconvene their teams and reopen their communities.

To support this important initiative, we’re seeking Laboratory Technicians to oversee the clinical diagnostics equipment within our high-complexity CLIA laboratory.  Working with state-of-the-art sequencers, sensors, automation systems, and more, you’ll help to both troubleshoot issues and coordinate vendor service requests to ensure the reliability and regulatory compliance of our equipment.  With your clinical laboratory experience and acute attention to detail, your role will be critical to Concentric’s operational success.

Please note:  this is a fixed-term role for an approximate 6-month duration, with the potential to extend to full-time.  This position has a rotating shift schedule, which will require some evening and weekend hours.

Responsibilities

    • Serve as the main point of contact for all issues related to Ginkgo’s clinical diagnostics equipment:  identify and resolve problems (when possible), coordinate and schedule vendor service requests, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to address specific concerns.
    • Perform periodic and scheduled maintenance tasks, including instrument cleaning, equipment calibration and validation/verification, fluid level checks and changes, filter changes, lubrication, and software updates.
    • Maintain accurate and organized records of all work performed, in accordance with CLIA regulations and internal guidelines.
    • Coordinate and communicate any issues and resolutions with the Service Manager, as well as team members on other shifts.

Desired Experience and Capabilities

    • Associate’s degree in engineering or related field (or equivalent experience)
    • At least 2 years of experience working with complex clinical diagnostics equipment, preferably within a laboratory setting.
    • Prior experience in CLIA-certified and/or BSL2 laboratory environments a strong plus
    • Familiarity with laboratory automation equipment, such as liquid handlers, plate sealers, plate peelers, barcode labelers, and tube scanners highly preferred
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
    • Strong level of efficiency and self-motivation to complete tasks accurately and on time
    • Extremely process-oriented mindset, with acute attention to detail
    • Strong drive to help our project succeed, keeping in mind Ginkgo’s mission and the customers we’re supporting

Our culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with people from all walks of life.

We’re developing a powerful biological engineering platform, we must remain mindful of the many ways our technology can – and will – impact people around the world. We care about how our platform is used, and having a diverse team to build it gives us the best chance that it’s something we’ll be proud of as it continues to grow. Therefore, it’s critical that we incorporate the diverse voices and visions of all those who play a role in the future of biology.
