About Ginkgo Bioworks

Headquartered in Boston, Ginkgo Bioworks uses the most advanced technology on the planet – biology – to grow products instead of manufacturing them. We design custom microbes for customers across multiple markets, and build our foundries to scale the process of organism engineering using software and hardware automation.

Job Description

We’re looking for a highly talented Data Quality Analyst to join our team and help build our COVID-19 testing service, Concentric by Ginkgo.  This effort is designed to provide broader access to COVID-19 diagnostic testing solutions, and is supported by partners such as Illumina and the National Institutes of Health - including one of the first awards under NIH’s Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) program.

We're inspired and heartened by the tremendous public health response to COVID-19, and recognize that a similar scale of effort is needed by the biotech community to find long-term solutions to this crisis.  Therefore, we’re building increased Foundry capacity to support high rates of testing frequency for our clients, offering an end-to-end, onsite testing service designed to test large communities of individuals.  Performed at high-scale and high-throughput, this additional testing capacity will be essential for organizations, institutions, and companies to be able to reconvene their teams and reopen their communities.

To aid in these efforts, we’re seeking a dedicated Data Quality Analyst to join our team.  Serving as the primary liaison between our Clinical Operations and Bioinformatics Teams, you’ll analyze complex next-generation sequencing (NGS) data to establish quality metrics, identify patterns and trends, explore hypotheses, and make recommendations for improvement.  You’ll also leverage your technical expertise and exceptional communications skills to produce impactful visualizations of your findings and influence key stakeholder decisions.  With an acute attention to detail and ability to explore data sets in creative and innovative ways, your role will be critical to Concentric’s success.

Please note:  This is a fixed-term role for an approximate 6-month duration, with the potential to extend to full-time.

Responsibilities

    • Routinely monitor data dashboards that monitor process quality measures, and alert Concentric by Ginkgo’s Operations Team of any deviations
    • Analyze datasets using R, Python, Tableau, or similar coding approaches to identify possible correlates between performance process variables
    • Create impactful visualizations, models, and reports to effectively convey data findings, communicate results, and influence key decisions across teams.
    • Collaborate with Concentric by Ginkgo’s Development and Operations Teams to develop, refine, and explore hypotheses relating to quality metrics and external variables, such as dates, instruments, operators, spatial relationships of samples, reagents, etc.
    • Assist our Digital Technology Team with shaping the implementation of new quality monitoring tools and visualizations.
    • Continuously review SOPs and other protocols to identify quality monitoring opportunities.
    • Monitor next-generation sequencing (NGS) data - in both aligned (BAM) and unaligned (FASTQ) formats - to observe and investigate errors, anomalies, etc.

Desired Experience and Capabilities

    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, bioinformatics, or related field
    • 1-5 years of experience in data science and/or bioinformatics within a laboratory environment, preferably in a clinical setting
    • Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing Python, R, SQL, Tableau, and workflow languages for data analysis and visualization
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a proven track record of effectively conveying highly technical and complex information between cross-functional teams
    • Strong multitasking skills, with the ability to work on multiple, concurrent projects and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
    • Strong drive to help our project succeed, keeping in mind Ginkgo’s mission and the customers we’re supporting
