About Culture Biosciences

Culture Biosciences develops automated bioreactor infrastructures and runs it as a service for biotech companies.

Job Description

Culture Biosciences grows organisms for biotech companies. We've built the first cloud bioreactor facility. Here’s how it works:

  1. Our customers, biotechnology companies, design organisms (bacteria, yeast, mammalian cells) to produce products (materials, therapeutics, food).
  2. We grow their cells in our bioreactors to optimize the yield of their products. Ultimately, we help our customers get their products to market faster.
  3. Our customers receive their experimental results live on our website.

Our cloud bioreactor facility is made possible by custom software and automation technology that our team develops. The automated infrastructure is also more efficient to operate than traditional equipment. Our software also provides quick and simple data analysis, enabling customers to analyze reams of data quickly.

The Role:

At Culture, we generate and manage large datasets for our customers. We have several software initiatives that leverage these datasets to create new insights for customers. Our team also works to improve the quality and efficiency of our internal operations by examining past datasets. This role would specialize in data analysis and modeling but be focused on putting code into production.  Many of our engineers are interested in statistical modeling and have some experience with various aspects of data science, but this role would be our first specialist in this area.

We would like someone to join our team who is excited and motivated to build new systems that leverage our data, and to improve existing systems for our bioreactor devices and our services in the cloud.  The work will directly impact quality of execution, and will also generate novel datasets to attract new customers.  Specifically this person will perform complex data analysis to develop controllers, state estimators and other metrics.

What you'll do:

  • Help define our software engineering culture
  • Proactively solve the problems most important to the business
  • Write high quality software for our reactors and cloud services
  • Do code reviews
  • Learn about cell culture, bio-manufacturing, and biotechnology
In return, we will support you by:
  • Placing a high degree of trust in your ideas and execution
  • Bringing you up to speed in the domain of fermentation
  • Providing a low-stress work environment
  • Making ourselves available for collaboration
  • Caring about you as a whole person, not a “resource”
Projects on our horizon
  • Improving and creating new control systems that run on our bioreactors
  • Building out our data pipeline for state estimation of our bioprocesses
  • Implementing automated determination of quality metrics of our bioprocesses
  • Developing soft sensor models for estimating various process-significant parameters such as biomass, metabolic state and mass transfer.
  • Setting the groundwork and internal tooling for data science at Culture

About You:

  • You have 3-5 years of experience in backend software development.
    • You have a clear perspective on how to architect and build backend systems correctly
  • You have an advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in the sciences or engineering.
    • Can independently tackle problems
    • Strong fundamentals in science and engineering
    • Experience with "messy" datasets
  • You have a reputation for being technically rigorous.
  • You see the bigger picture -- the holistic technical system as well as the business objectives.
  • You’re kind, curious and enjoy learning new things.
  • You value communication and connection with a multidisciplinary team
  • You care that you’re building something that solves a problem and helps end users.

Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary and equity compensation
  • Medical (PPO), Dental, Vision, and Life insurance
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • 3 weeks of paid time off and 10 days of company holidays
  • 12 weeks of parental leave at full salary
  • Access to on-site child care facility, subject to availability
  • Free onsite breakfast, lunch, snacks, coffee, and gym (varies based on COVID-19 restrictions)
  • Support for relevant educational opportunities

Culture Biosciences provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants. We seek to build a company that promotes inclusion and expands the diversity of our industry as a whole. We encourage people with identities underrepresented in biotech and technology to apply.
