About Synthekine

Synthekine, a biotechnology company focused on discovery and developing best in class cytokine therapeutics

Job Description

Synthekine is a biotechnology company focused on discovery and developing best in class cytokine therapeutics to treat cancer and autoimmune diseases. The company was founded by Dr. Chris Garcia, Stanford University Professor and Howard Hughes Medical investigator. Synthekine is based on our unique insights on how cytokines bind to their receptors and how these systems can be tuned through ligand engineering. Synthekine was formed in 2019 and has raised its Series A venture capital round from Canaan Partners, Samsara Biocapital, and The Column Group, three leading Bay Area biotech venture funds. The company is based in Menlo Park, CA and has built integrated research, manufacturing, and in-vivo pharmacology capabilities.

Synthekine is advancing a deep pipeline that includes several preclinical programs, including biased versions of Interleukin-2 and Interferon Gamma. These cytokines have been tuned to decouple anticancer and anti-inflammatory activity at the molecular level, a differentiated approach to developing selective therapeutics. In addition to these pre-clinical products, Synthekine is founded on multiple therapeutic platforms, including a platform that allows for non-natural pairing of cytokine receptors, potentially resulting in novel biology and unique therapeutics.

We are looking for a talented & driven downstream development scientist to play a key role in the development and execution of downstream processes for Synthekine’s various drug candidates. Expression systems may be either microbial or mammalian. The successful candidate will show an aptitude and affinity for developing and driving forward highly robust protein purification processes, from research candidates through large scale manufacturing. The downstream process development scientist may also be responsible for mentoring junior scientists/research associates. Level will be commensurate with experience.

  • The process development scientist will be responsible for developing all aspects of the protein purification process & will be integral in building Synthekine’s production platform. Experiment types may include resin screening studies, filtration studies, formulation optimization studies, DOE, protein refolding studies, etc.
  • Strong experience in microbial process development
  • Lab scale protein purification including utilization of AKTA’s, lab scale TFF, and clarification equipment and techniques
  • Troubleshoot, propose next steps, or suggest alternate strategies within complex systems & problems
  • Perform installation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Authorship of protocols, development reports, tech transfer reports, and agency filing sections.
  • Evaluates and implements novel strategies while at the same time considering robustness, scalability, feasibility in a cGMP environment, target protein expression level & purity, and process cost
  • Functions as the downstream process development technical representative & SME both internally and to CMO partners
  • Communicate experimental findings accurately and concisely in both oral and written form
  • Analyze, document and report laboratory data in accordance with Synthekine’s standards and procedures
  • Present at group meetings, project team meetings and company-wide meetings
  • Advanced degree in Biochemistry, Immunology, or similar fields with 4 years post-graduate experience (persons with BS degree who have comparable depth and breadth of training and experience and who meet job-specific criteria are eligible for consideration)
  • Extensive experience with molecular biology, protein purification, and process development
  • Preferred experience working with and providing support to contract manufacturing organizations
  • Robust experience running and optimizing protein purification processes and experience scaling processes and driving to successful cGMP outcomes
  • Strong written and oral communications skills, with demonstrated experience in cross-functional and timely communication
  • Strong and collaborative work ethic; must be a self-starter and persistent in achieving objectives to support Synthekine’s scientific and business goals
  • Must work well in a small team setting, with ability to work independently and collaboratively, while meeting scheduled deadlines in a fast-paced environment
