Job Description

Vox is looking for an entrepreneurial talk show programming lead. Our new Deputy Editorial Director will work closely with the Editorial Director to oversee and grow Vox’s strong portfolio of interview and roundtable audio content across distribution platforms – from podcasts to digital assistants to terrestrial platforms.

This is an opportunity for the right candidate to define the next generation of Vox talk. The Deputy Editorial Director will assess our shows’ vision and mission, refresh and strengthen programming, and implement plans for ongoing improvement, audience growth and overall business goals. You’ll also work with existing show hosts, producers and audio engineers to ensure our content is produced at the highest level and constantly breaking new editorial and sonic ground. There are nuts and bolts things, too: You’ll be responsible for ensuring our teams are resourced and supported, and you’ll work with our in-house data teams and external platforms to curate audience metrics and editorial insights and communicate them in a regular feedback loop.

We’re looking for someone with a keen sense of quality audio programming, who also has an entrepreneurial spirit and desire to challenge expectations and norms as we continue to grow our business in new and exciting ways. Successful candidates must share our reverence for curiosity and dogged commitment to explanatory journalism.

This role would benefit from experience working in broadcast TV or radio, or conversation-based podcasts, but that isn’t a requirement. Experience managing teams and budgets, overseeing shows and working with high-profile hosts would also be valuable. Comfort working in a fast-paced environment, ability to pivot quickly and comfort leading strategic project teams are also key qualities we’re seeking.

The ideal candidate should be equally comfortable working on interview prep, cutting a show or coaching a host in one minute while pivoting to marketing and engagement strategy or revenue the next.

Vox values thinkers, creatives, and obsessives from all backgrounds. We are looking to hire the right person — not the right résumé. We encourage those with diverse and nontraditional experience to apply.

What you'll do:

  • Provide hands-on editorial direction across Vox’s existing talk portfolio and additional shows as we grow.
  • Identify and attract top talent and talk show concepts.
  • Work with hosts and producers to define strategies for booking guests and topics that would be valuable to the shows and Vox’s mission.
  • Grow our audience in both traditional and experimental ways.
  • Manage budgets for shows including negotiating studio fees and working with freelancers as needed.
  • Coach producers and audio engineers who cut, mix, master and publish the shows
  • Manage talk show producers and engineers
  • Ensure shows meet Vox’s high journalistic and creative standards.
  • Collaborate with Vox journalists, show hosts and talent and help them develop their on-air skills and ideas.

What you'll bring:

  • Experience working and providing feedback to top editorial talent
  • Ability to coach and develop host talent and show concepts across a range of talk show projects
  • Great editorial judgment and instincts
  • Strong collaborative skills, as well as the ability to delegate and prioritize effectively
  • Experience managing budgets and freelance contributors
  • A track record of developing and managing shows and episodes that draw on diverse perspectives/source lists
  • Great team player that is able to both coach direct reports and work collaboratively across teams and departments (with staff who do not report to you) to produce and monetize incredible shows
  • Interest in explanatory journalism, big ideas, and driving conversation
  • Experience successfully growing audience and business goals
  • Experience executing plans to grow strategic revenue and audience
