About Fathom Computing

Fathom Computing is building optics-based hardware to run artificial intelligence with unprecedented performance.

Job Description

Fathom Computing is developing high-performance machine learning computers built to run both training and inference workflows for large-scale neural networks.  As ML computing is largely limited by data transfer, Fathom’s approach combines the power of CMOS electronics with advantages of optical data movement for performance far beyond what electronics-only computers are capable of.
We are seeking an experienced professional with broad interest and solid technical background in the fields of micro-optics. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and development of micr-optics components and systems.  The ideal candidate will be experienced in evaluating optical design solutions via analytical techniques and tools to predict performance and manufacturability. This includes lens design, tolerance analysis, detailed drawing preparation, and system performance modeling in support of program deliverables ranging from prototype hardware to first article production units.  The candidate will also be responsible to help develop test methods and procedures to characterize optical system performance.

Areas of contribution

    • Conceive and design functional 3D micro-optical structures such as multi-element lenslet arrays and lenses.  Work with micro-optic vendors to deliver pre-production prototypes and optical stack assembly techniques.
    • Design and simulation of micro-optical elements. Take a lead role in developing optical system designs and defining design philosophy and directing and performing system analyses.  Identify specific plans to accomplish the project on time, utilizing optical design/analysis software (Zemax preferred).
    • Experience with non-sequential raytrace methods and stray light analysis also desired.
    • Preferred experience leading and managing engineering projects.
    • Working knowledge of optical assembly & testing techniques including MTF testing, interferometry, alignment telescopes and optical inspection devices.  Evaluation of micro-optic vendor capabilities and integration of vendor constraints into the optical design.
    • Work with opto-mechanical engineer to develop mechanical tolerancing.
    • Evaluation of vendor assembly constraints and design of micro-optic components for automated assembly.

    • Ph.D. + 3 years experience (or equivalent knowledge and experience)
    • Experience in design, fabrication, and testing of micro-optical components
    • Familiarity with fabrication processes for wafer scale optics
    • Strong communication skills, ideally combined with experience in supplier interaction.

    • Experience in managing of technology development projects, ideally in an industrial environment

You'll do well here if....

    • You enjoy thoughtful discussions fueled by problem-solving and logic
    • You're comfortable both leading and contributing individually
    • You're excited about the future of ML hardware
    • You enjoy teaching and learning from an interdisciplinary team
We highly encourage submission of a cover letter, just tell us why you're here :)
