About Adaptimmune

Adaptimmune, a leader in T-cell therapy, is a multinational, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel immunotherapies using its proprietary SPEAR T-cell receptor platform to treat solid tumors, which has the potential to transform the treatment of cancer.

Job Description

Adaptimmune is a leader in T-cell therapy, with clinical trials ongoing in multiple solid tumour indications. The Company's unique SPEAR (Specific Peptide Enhanced Affinity Receptor) T‑cell platform enables the engineering of T-cells to target and destroy cancer, including solid tumours.

Within the Discovery Research department, the Mass Spectrometry group primarily focusses on the development and application of mass spectrometry-based assays to identify new HLA-peptide targets for the company’s SPEAR T-cell pipeline. Additionally, the group develops analytical approaches such as quantitative proteomics assays to support other functional groups within the company.

Reporting to the group leader, the main purpose of this role is to conduct experiments as necessary within the Mass Spectrometry group. Whilst initially requiring training and supervision, the job holder will develop further scientific skills to be able to work more independently on routine experiments. The job holder will also be responsible for the analysis and interpretation of mass spectrometry data and results. They will also be involved in one or more support activities to enable the smooth running of the laboratory, such as maintenance of HPLCs and mass spectrometers.

• Purification and identification of HLA peptides by LC-MS from cell lines and tumour tissues; analysis of mass spectrometry data; optimisation of methods and monitoring performance of LC-MS equipment.
• Maintenance and calibration of HPLCs and mass spectrometers.
• Summarising and recording experimental results and maintenance of relevant databases.
• Participation in group meetings and communication of results to other research groups within Adaptimmune.
• Routine lab maintenance.

• Undergraduate degree in Life Sciences.
• Relevant post-graduate experience in an industrial lab environment or through qualifications, such as an MSc. or PhD.
• Experience in either mass spectrometry analysis of peptides and proteins, or protein biochemistry with emphasis on affinity purification of proteins from cells and tissues.

• Experience of data analysis relevant to mass spectrometry and proteomics.
• Experience in troubleshooting issues in LC-MS performance.
• Bioinformatic analyses of large datasets.

• Knowledge and skills to use standard laboratory equipment (such as pipettes, pH meters, centrifuges).
• Ability to follow protocols.
• Basic experimental design skills (use of controls, etc.), attention to detail, good time management skills, and ability to accurately record observations and results.
• Computer literate and able to familiarise with different IT systems and data-analysis tools.
• Ability to work independently on routine experiments with limited supervision.
• Ability to learn and develop in order to work independently on more complex experiments within a reasonable time frame.
• Strong team player but with the ability to work independently as well.
• Excellent numeracy and English language skills (both written and verbal)
• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)

• Able to use more specialist lab equipment e.g. analytical HPLC, nano-flow HPLC, Mass Spectrometers.
• Able to use mass spectrometry data-analysis tools, like PEAKS, ProteomeDiscoverer, Skyline, MaxQuant, etc.
• Programming and data-analysis using languages such as R, Perl, Python, SQL, etc.
