The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity and fairness for domestic workers in the United States. Founded in 2007, NDWA works for the respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections of domestic and home care workers across the country. NDWA is winning improved working conditions while building a powerful movement rooted in the human rights, dignity and equality of domestic workers, home care workers, immigrant women and Black women.

NDWA was founded in 2007 by domestic workers and organizers from around the country. Our national alliance has grown from this founding group of 13 organizations to now more than 70 affiliate organizations, and local chapters developed by NDWA in Atlanta, Durham, Washington DC and New York City, and individual members from states without affiliates or chapters to join. To date, the Alliance reaches over 250,000 nannies, housekeepers, and home care workers in 44 cities and 20 states.

Care in Action is a (501c4) nonprofit, nonpartisan group dedicated to fighting for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States, most of whom are women. Founded in 2016, Care in Action provides the tools, trainings, and community that working families need to make their voices heard, and organize and advocate for respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections.

NDWA Labs is the innovation arm of the​ National Domestic Workers Alliance​. Founded in 2015, NDWA Labs was launched to experiment with new strategies for improving marketplace norms for domestic workers, including launching sustainable ventures and collaborating with the private sector. Our approach is to innovate, build smart and practical tools and products, and form private sector partnerships that help us reach and lift standards for domestic workers.

Position Summary:

NDWA recognizes the critical role that a well-run human resources department plays in a sustainable organizational ecosystem and the achievement of its strategic goals. The Senior Human Resources Director is responsible for visioning, creating, shaping, and overseeing NDWA’s human resources work. The Senior HR Director partners closely with the Deputy Director and Care in Action’s Operations Director to advocate for a comprehensive HR strategy that supports organizational and individual growth, sustainability, external impact and healthy internal culture. This position supports a staff of 120+ permanent staff, up to 300 temporary staff and an HR team. NDWA is also proud to become a union employer and this position will play a key role in ensuring a first union contract.

Responsibilities:

I. Human Resources and Organizational Development

    Vision, plan, manage, and oversee organizational best practices, policies, procedures, guidelines and tools to meet HR goals that support NDWA, NDWA Labs and Care in Action.
    Oversee implementation of human resources policies, programs, and practices, identify opportunities for improvement, and oversee execution of HR improvement projects.
    Establish, implement, and lead a talent acquisition strategy that includes robust sourcing, selection, and interview practices and designed to recruit and hire the sector’s best talent.
    Develop and oversee onboarding and orientation processes and systems to ensure comprehensive organizational integration for incoming staff and their ongoing retention.
    Design and oversee compensation and benefits structure and programs to ensure alignment with organizational goals, values, vision, budget, market competition, and employee priorities.
    Manage relationships with HR vendors and benefits providers.
    In partnership with the Deputy Director, oversee and implement annual performance evaluations, professional development programs, policies and processes, including organization-wide staff development initiatives, individual professional development plans, results tracking, career pathways, and succession planning
    Work with staff to provide support in communicating issues to supervisors, colleagues, and supervisees.

II. Compliance

    Play a leadership role as part of management in union negotiations.
    Ensure compliance with all existing government and legal reporting requirements, including any related to the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Paid Family Leave (PFL), Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), the Department of Labor, worker compensation, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and other relevant local and state labor laws.
    In partnership with legal counsel and the Deputy Director, advise management, supervisors, and staff regarding employee relations matters and legal issues related to personnel policies and employment laws
    In partnership with legal counsel and the Deputy Director, minimize organizational risk related to employment and personnel matters.
    Oversee all employee related internal investigations.
    Develop and ensure that employment policies and practices promote diversity, equity and inclusion, are consistent with best practices in the field, and are fully compliant with applicable federal, state, and local laws and other regulatory requirements governing employers.

Job Requirements:

    Minimum of 5 years in HR, with experience in 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 entities a plus.
    Experience leading HR in a team of at least 100 employees.
    Experience in a unionized organization a plus.
    Alignment with NDWA’s vision and values, including a commitment to economic, race and gender justice.
    Familiarity with the domestic worker sector and issues facing domestic workers and other low-wage workers.
    Proven ability to learn quickly, work independently, meet multiple deadlines with a keen attention to detail.
    Ability to work and collaborate with diverse staff in person and remotely and as part of a high-performing team, in a fast-paced, experimental organization.
    Strong organizational skills, and creative problem solver
    Proficiency in Microsoft Office required and Google Suite preferred ​(include other platforms or technical skills as applicable).
    Spanish proficiency a plus.
