About Zymergen

We are a science and material innovation company rethinking biology and reimagining the world. A World Economic Forum Tech Pioneer, we partner with nature to create never-before imagined materials and products across industries – from agriculture to electronics, consumer care to pharmaceuticals, and more.

Job Description

Zymergen is hiring a distinctive Scientist to expand our Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) capabilities to support high throughput engineering of microbial genomes.  The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of genomics and sequencing technologies, a high level of creativity to invent new technologies and adapt existing technology in order to advance our platform, along with a proactive approach to continuous improvement. The Scientist will use and improve existing protocols and develop new technologies in order to deliver against program milestones at Zymergen. The Scientist will work collaboratively with other scientists, research associates, automation engineers, and software engineers to achieve the goals above. This is also an opportunity to directly impact program success while shaping the microbe engineering platform of the future within a dynamic company.

Job Description and Specific Responsibilities

Immediate responsibilities involve:

  • Conceiving and creating new capabilities and workflows to advance our sequencing platform
  • Collaborating across teams to address unmet needs across the company
  • Working with the NGS team members to deliver rapid turnaround sequencing services (amplicon, tagmentation of plasmids/edited strains) as well as long and short read sequencing for Genome Onboarding
  • Assisting with troubleshooting for above workflows
  • Proactively identifying and driving continuous improvement projects to improve cost/capacity/TAT
  • Specifying requirements and providing guidance to adjacent teams for the development of infrastructure in support of NGS workflows

This Scientist will contribute both to the technical and cultural foundations within Zymergen.

We favor candidates with formal training (PhD, or equivalent experience) in molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or related fields.  We prefer candidates with a history of successfully developing NGS related technologies for genome engineering in a laboratory research setting. While we will consider applicants appropriate academic experience, we greatly favor candidates with 2-5 years of relevant industry experience for this role. Lastly, we look for candidates who have demonstrated creativity and problem solving in a variety of fields.  We prefer candidates with experience in several of the following areas.

Biology and Chemistry:

  • Strong technical background in the field of Next Generation Sequencing (proficiency in both wet lab sample prep and data analysis).
  • Expertise with Next-Gen sequencing instruments, workflows and applications to analyze various types of samples
  • Experience with third generation sequencing technologies (i.e. long read) is a plus
  • Proficiency with techniques used to validate large DNA assemblies and microbial genomes
  • Experience in improving workflows/gaining efficiency
  • Familiarity with high throughput strain engineering of model and/or non-model microbes
  • Understanding of genetics and gene regulation for a variety of eukaryotic and prokaryotic microbes

Advanced Tools:

  • Adept at utilizing laboratory automation (Labcyte Echo, Agilent, Tecan, Beckman, and others) to assist with complicated or lengthy workflows
  • Competent in using statistics to strengthen experimental design and enable robust data analysis
  • Capable of developing software scripts to assist designing experiments and processing data
  • Success in technology transfer/handoff of materials/processes to other teams

Teamwork/Personality Attributes:

  • Must be comfortable communicating and working with others across departments and disciplines
  • Proven track record of initiative, attention to detail, and providing/adapting to feedback
  • Strong interest in advancing driving the advancement of NGS technologies, improving and optimizing workflows while continuing to deliver on project milestones
