Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of Health and Safety in Zymergen Inc. product development and chemical safety program. The key responsibilities of this position are to support new products through reducing the risk of injury/illness and minimize adverse events through the use of sound safety and health controls.  Specific oversight will include but is not limited to overseeing the development of SDS’s, support the development of OEL’s and OEB’s, chemical hygiene/lab safety, hazard evaluation, product stewardship, data interpretation, hazard communication, personal protective equipment evaluation, incident investigation, and hazardous materials shipping.  Additionally, The Candidate will serve as a subject matter expert in new product development. The candidate will advise on health and safety requirements during the lifecycle development. The Candidate will serve as a direct liaison with management, legal, quality, researchers, chemists, CRO’s, CMO’s, employees, and visitors/contractors, as well as EHS regulatory authorities.

Immediate responsibilities include:

  • Chemical safety program development with the ability to interpret information and analyze data.
  • Carried out programs related to the OSHA Process Safety and EPA Risk Management Programs Including: Process Hazard Analysis, PHA re-validations and HAZOP studies, and Capital project safety reviews.
  • Development a process for establishing, assigning and managing occupational exposure through the use of technical knowledge of Occupational exposure bands (OEB) and occupational exposure limits (OEL) to protect employee health and wellbeing in the workplace.
  • Review process-related hazards and hazardous events as identified in hazardous operations reviews and project safety reviews.
  • Identify new process hazards associated with scope or design changes, and detailed all the ways in which a hazardous event could occur.
  • Developed practical recommendations for process changes to mitigate, control, or eliminate process-related hazards and meet process related risk reduction objectives. 
  • Strong organizational, critical thinking, problem solving, and written/verbal communication skills
  • Ability to plan, organize, adapt, and develop technical skills in disciplines beyond area of expertise
  • Ability to interact and effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Familiar with Chemical inventory systems, chemical sharing and inventory reduction 
  • Self-directed and motivated
  • Position is best suited for an energetic team-player who can operate autonomously, prioritize and adopt work responsibilities and multi-task.
  • Excellent collaboration skills 
  • Understand and guide a Control Banding Program for R&D Compounds, driving hazard determination, safe handling, proper disposal, and appropriate shipment. 


Safety and health experience in chemical and/or biological manufacturing is a must. Experience with research & development is preferred. 

Experience in pharmaceutical, industrial hygiene, chemical exposure control, biosafety, program development, training, management system implementation, remediation, and conducting EHS compliance.

MS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or similar is required 

Ph.D. in Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences a plus

Additional Details
Desired but not required Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CCHO) Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Zymergen may agree to sponsor an individual for an employment visa now or in the future if there is a shortage of individuals with particular skills for this job.
