Job Description

Free Agency represents and manages careers in tech. Hollywood entertainers & athletes have talent agents — shouldn’t you? We currently work with clients (Free Agents) who work in the technology industry broadly, driving their searches for new jobs and/or helping them succeed at their jobs. We’ve raised $5.35M from amazing investors, including Resolute Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, Ludlow Ventures, and more.

Our Talent team manages individual talent in a similar way that an agent or broker in another industry might represent a buyer or seller. We charge these Free Agents a percentage of income over time for our services, and so our incentives are totally aligned with finding them high-fit, high-paying jobs. Our Free Agents are primarily mid-to-senior candidates in the tech industry with roles in software engineering, product management, marketing, operations, and other functional areas within tech-forward organizations.

These Free Agents work at companies like Amazon, Uber, Square, Tinder, SpaceX, Google, and Netflix. They also work at emerging startups backed by top-tier venture capitalists, including Sequoia, USV, Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, Index, and Benchmark.

Some of what we provide is digital, such as tools to track skills, interesting opportunities, and overall career progress. Most of what we provide is concierge service, fueled by our Talent Agents who pair closely with Free Agents on their job search or career success.

We’re looking for an emerging leader to come be the first non-founder director for our team of Talent Agents. This individual will be responsible for training, managing, and driving Talent Agents, with the ultimate goal of providing excellent service to our Free Agents and driving business outcomes. Business outcomes come in two flavors: (1) job placement and (2) renewals for career management.

You’ll be responsible not only for ensuring that our Talent Agents execute our already-known strategies and tactics, but also for coming up with new ways to provide service, accelerate performance, and expand revenue & success.

While we don’t require this individual to have a background in recruiting or coaching, they should be particularly fascinated and motivated by the role we play in the talent space. You should have some intuition and confidence in knowing the right answer for individuals considering career choices in tech. Finally, you should have managed teams in your prior role(s).

This role will flex with seniority. In other words, we’re open to director, senior director, or VP versions of this hire, dependent on any candidate’s qualifications and aptitude.

Your expected responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, train, and develop a team of Talent Agents as they manage accounts (Free Agents) and drive business outcomes
  • Direct resources and orient your team through daily operations, including collaborative P&L ownership and quarterly planning
  • Define, maintain, and evolve KPIs that measure Talent Agent success through a variety of ever-improving service offerings
  • Create, maintain, and evolve playbooks and processes that enable us to scale our human-driven offerings in an efficient manner
  • Triage and escalate issues for our Free Agents, your Talent Agents, and for the Free Agency executive team
  • Partner with Talent Agents on their individual career goals, performance, client success, and overall job satisfaction
  • Deliver team feedback quickly, directly, and with concrete action items that lead the team to a high sense of autonomy and excellent performance
  • Build an external brand related to talent acquisition, Free Agent placement, employer partnerships, and overall community
  • Attract, interview, and hire additional, high-performing Talent Agents

Things you may want to know:

  • We are currently working home during COVID-19. However, this will be a full-time, on-site role in New York City once things are safe again, and this is non-negotiable.
  • We are seeking a leader with experience inside the startup & tech industry, as this is key to being able to train Talent Agents and advise Free Agents.

Internally, you will:

  • Report to and work closely with the CEO.
  • Work closely with the COO and Chief of Staff.
  • Manage the growing team of Talent Agents.
  • Collaborate with the Operations team.
