Job Description

Synthego is enabling genome engineering at scale with a blend of scientific instrumentation, industrial automation, and data science. Our team of scientists and engineers are putting multidisciplinary fields together to solve problems that no one field could tackle alone.

We are currently searching for a Scientist for our Custom Engineered Cells program. This role will be responsible for the generation of custom cell lines using Synthego’s genome engineering reagents and technologies.

This role is hands-on with our Manufacturing group, lab-based, and will supervise a supporting team of Cell Culture Specialists and Research Associates.

This position will be responsible for solving challenging genome engineering problems, ensuring processes are executed correctly while working to develop new and improved protocols, instrumentation, and assays.

What You'll Do

Work closely with multidisciplinary contributors to build a semi-automated cell engineering operation, focused on delivering custom engineered cell lines for research and customer needs.
Design sgRNA guides, ssODN/ssDNA/dsDNA donors, and primers for CRISPR/Cas9 knock-in and knock-out experiments to ultimately deliver edited pools and clonal populations.
Analyze imaging results and sequencing results as part of project execution.
Operate robotic instrumentation including liquid handling systems, imaging tools and software, as well as standalone isolated expansion systems.
Independently execute on production projects, while adhering to production timelines and turn around times.
Provide project updates to the Scientific Project Manager and Scientific Operations Manager to ensure customers are up to date regarding progress and expected delivery dates.
Document project related design, progress, and results in LIMS real time.
Assist in the generation of production Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to enable technical transfer to the Production team.
Generate Quality Documents and Reports as part of project completion.
Work closely with the Process  Engineering to develop and optimize protocols for CRISPR experiments and cell imaging methods
Mentor and/or supervise Cell Culture Specialists and Research Associates as required.
Track new techniques and technologies in CRISPR genome editing space

About You

M.S. or Ph.D. in synthetic/molecular biology, biochemistry, or bioengineering
3 - 5 + years of life sciences wet lab experience including operating scientific instrumentation and/or manufacturing environment
Significant experience with mammalian cell culture and clonal cell population generation.
Experience culturing and editing different mammalian cell types, both suspension and adherent at small scale (96wp to T-75)
Demonstrated experience designing guides and donors for CRISPR/Cas9 editing, as well as analyzing results from Sanger Sequencing.
Strong molecular biology skills including handling and purification of gDNA, PCR design and execution, RNA isolation, and molecular cloning skills
Experience developing and optimizing scientific protocols or Standard Operating Procedures.
Ability to contribute to the design and analysis of experimental procedures by incorporating the views of others to conduct where appropriate in parallel more than one agreed area of work to agreed timelines
Looking for an energetic production startup environment
Innovative publications and excellent oral and written communication skills and organizational skills

Nice to Haves

        Fluorescence microscopy and/or FACS
Experience editing and/or culturing induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and primary cells
        Automation robotics and high-throughput experience
NGS library prep and data analysis
Prior experience working in a Manufacturing or Core Facility environment

Company Perks & Benefits

        Competitive salary
Generous equity at an early stage company
Robust medical, dental and vision benefits
        401k Plan
        Fully stocked kitchen and snacks
        Free catered lunches and dinners
        Onsite gym
Daily shuttle bus to & from San Francisco
