About Scroll

Scroll’s mission is to enable frictionless access to a thriving free press.

Job Description

Scroll is building a better internet for everyone, one site at a time. Scroll members get to experience a fast, private, ad-free experience across hundreds of sites including Vox, The Atlantic, Buzzfeed and Slate with more every month. Membership enables sites to make more money than they would have from ads and get to build a sustainable future for quality on the web.

Design is at the core of what we do: Designing a product that can make the internet feel magical without getting in the way of what the user wants to do. Designing for an ecosystem of unprecedented diversity where quality and experience is paramount. Designing experiences that feel intuitive and seamless to users across different sites, services and surfaces without compromising their privacy. As a product designer you’ll use a full range of your design skills from user research, interaction design, and visual design to build delightful user experiences. We appreciate designers who think deeply, speak clearly, and love collaboration and feedback.

What you’ll do

  • Own key components of the product experience, from high-level user journeys and concept work to detailed interactions, flows, and visual design.
  • Partner closely with engineering and product to illuminate design challenges and come up with solutions that delight our users.
  • Listen to our users and be their voice. Those voices should inform and guide what we build and how we build it.
  • Rapidly produce multiple concepts and prototypes; knowing when to apply pixel-perfect attention to detail, and when to make low-fi sketches and prototypes.

Requirements

Who you are

  • You have 5+ years of digital product design experience where you’ve led a design process from blank page to polished product.
  • You’re comfortable using a variety of tools to create wireframes, high-fidelity UI/UX and rapid prototyping. Whatever works best to support your great communication skills
  • You're code literate.
  • You can move from mornings individually obsessed with kerning and grids to afternoons leading exercises in systems thinking and product creation. You enjoy thinking at different levels and don’t feel constrained to one part of the design spectrum.
  • Data and experimentation is close to your heart. You know how to leverage qualitative feedback and quantitative data to inform hypotheses and make design decisions.
  • You love working in a small team and are comfortable with ambiguity and adapting to a constantly changing environment. You’re always looking to learn and love collaborating to make products that sing.

Benefits

  • Every employee is considered an owner of the company with competitive salary and equity packages.
  • We pay 90% of base health and dental insurance costs for employees and families.
  • We try to be as generous and flexible as possible when it comes to paid time off, and we don’t want to hear from you when you're on vacation.
  • We provide $5,000 a year for learning and development
  • New parents receive 16 weeks of leave over the first two years

This role is open to someone who can report to either our New York, NY or Portland, OR offices post-COVID, but there is flexibility until then.

Companies work better when the people within them reflect a broad range of lived experiences and perspectives to draw from. They are faster to understand challenges, and identify opportunities. They make better quality decisions. They better understand and empathize with the people they seek to serve. We will always prioritize expanding that range of perspectives and lived experiences within our team with every hire we make. We do not discriminate on the basis of age, race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. We welcome applications from women, people of color, and other underrepresented groups.
