Job Description

Modern data analysis employs sophisticated methods such as machine learning that go well beyond the roll-up and drill-down capabilities of traditional SQL query engines. Runtime teams build the next generation distributed data storage and processing systems that can outperform specialized SQL query engines in relational query performance, yet provide the expressiveness and programming abstractions to support diverse workloads ranging from ETL to data science.

As an Engineering Director, you will: 

  • Recruit a world-class software engineering team, from sourcing to closing.
  • Drive strategic vision for your teams and product.
  • Establish high technical standards through processes and culture.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, leads and managers to help them carve out a fulfilling career.
  • Deliver infrastructure and product to make our customers’ lives better, and to support Databricks’ record-breaking growth.
  • Develop and establish process enabling teams to deliver efficiently while scaling 
  • Evangelize and uphold our cultural principles: be customer obsessed, be data-driven, team work makes the dream work, and own it.


  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience scaling and managing distributed teams from zero to 50 engineers.
  • Driven by delivering customer value and impact.
  • Experience being responsible for testing, quality, and SLAs of a product. Previous experience building and leading teams in a complex technical domain, such as on distributed data systems or database internals.
  • Ability to attract, hire, and coach world-class engineers. Can gain trust of team and guide their careers.
  • Existing experience building and running cloud platforms or demonstrated ability to quickly learn new concepts in the SaaS space (e.g technical background and fast learner).
  • Comfort working cross functionality with product management and directly with customers; ability to deeply understand product and customer personas.
