Next Generation Sequencing Scientist
 
This role will be responsible for performing technical and scientific processes and procedures in a high complexity genetic testing clinical laboratory. It will report to the CMO.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Performs routine high-complexity testing in molecular (genome sequencing) and microbiology (Covid-19), quality control, calibration, maintenance and proficiency testing in accordance with current laboratory procedures.
Follows procedures related to patient testing including but not limited to:
Receives and records delivery of patient samples.
Prepares specimens for the downstream processes performed in other areas of the lab. ○ Performs manual and automated molecular biology protocols
Review results, QC and sign off on wet lab results.
Informs senior personnel of any problem or issue that affects the reporting of patient results. ○ Documents any problems, issues or information that may be necessary for other testing personnel to be aware.
 
Instruments and equipment:
 
Coordinates routine laboratory tasks including ordering of supplies, restocking shelves, and data entry. Assist with Laboratory inventory.
Coordinates the maintenance of laboratory equipment, including the sequencers, instruments, and the generator.
Ensures that the laboratory facility and equipment remain in good working order.
 
QA/QC:
 
Works in a CAP/CLIA Laboratory environment and follows regulatory guidelines.
Assists with testing, implementation, and validation of new procedures and instrumentation.
Documents any problems, issues or information that may be necessary for other testing personnel to be aware.
Takes corrective action if Quality Control results are not within acceptable limits.
Document all corrective actions taken as indicated in established laboratory procedures.
Identifies opportunities for quality and workflow improvements and brings ideas to senior staff.
Performs logistical support for sample shipping to other locales.
Training and competency assessment of testing personnel as needed.
Maintains a clean, neat, and orderly work area.
Communicates effectively and fosters teamwork and mutual respect.
Adheres to Department Specific Safety Guidelines.
Must be able to relocate to work onsite.
 
May also be involved as a Biological Safety Officer and/or Chemical Hygiene Officer:
 
Establishes, maintains, and revises documentation and training related to biological safety. Monitors procurement, use, storage, and disposal of chemicals.
Conducts regular inspections of the laboratories, preparation rooms, and chemical storage rooms, and submits detailed laboratory inspection reports to administration.
Maintains the chemical inventory and SDS records.
Schedules regular waste pickups and maintains EPA, Mass DEP, and DOT records and annual compliance.
Assists laboratory supervisors in developing and maintaining adequate facilities.
Seeks ways to improve Veritas’ safety program.
Maintains training in IATA, DOT, and RCRA for sign-off on waste manifests.
 
Requirements

Reasonable accommodations may be made to individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Experience with most or all of the following technologies is preferred:
 
Minimum 2-3 years of experience with Next-generation sequencing library preparation and instrument runs is required.
Experience with DNA extraction, molecular biology techniques including qPCR, PCR, capillary electrophoresis, microarray preferred.
Operation of liquid handling systems.
Experience with inventory management and general laboratory management and oversight including (direct reports) preferred
Capillary electrophoresis: Sanger sequencing and fragment analysis.
Integrated laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
Attention to detail.
Computer skills: Google Suite, Microsoft Office, etc.
 
Education and Experience Requirements:
 
PhD in biological sciences or a related field with 2-3 years of NGS experience is preferred OR Masters with 3-5 years of experience in NGS and molecular biology techniques required.
Experience working in a molecular or CLIA/CAP laboratory is preferred.
Experience with the operation of automation/liquid handling system is preferred.
Experience with integrated laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is preferred.
ASCP certification (Molecular Biology) is a bonus, but not a requirement.
Experience in genomic workflows (e.g., exomes, genomes, NGS instrumentation) is a plus.
Must have ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
