Berkeley, CA, US

Opus 12 is a Berkeley, California based startup focused on recycling CO2 into higher value products. We are scientists and engineers with a passion for green chemistry and a shared vision to rewrite the story of waste carbon dioxide. Our team partners with industry leaders in electrolysis and plant design to implement our technology at scale.

We are looking for a Senior Analytical Chemist to join our team immediately.

Job Brief

As a Senior Analytical Chemist, you will be helping the team develop testing and characterization methods around the manufacturing of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for our electrochemical CO2 conversion process. In this role, you will work with members of the MEA fabrication team to develop new analytical methods, manage and improve existing methods, and resource new tools for scaled up fabrication. Quality control and attention to detail are key to our success and forward progress.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and optimize methods and procedures to provide accurate and efficient analytical measurements for gauging quality of raw material inputs, final MEA product characterization, failure mode analysis and defect characterization
  • Improve existing measurement and data analysis techniques for enhanced data quality and turnaround
  • Manage and track high volume of data systematically, and coordinate with the software team to manage data
  • Identify solutions for non-destructive in-line catalyst coating metrology measurement, work with engineering teams to build and implement
  • Procure, manage and maintain in-line and offline analytical equipment for a growing fabrication environment
  • Manage and operate laboratory tools such as balances, pH/temperature/conductivity probes, pipettes, titrators, stir/hot plates, and moisture analyzer
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot instrument issues, and maintain supplier relationships for consumables, repairs and parts
  • Prepare SOPs, physical product specifications and SDS documentation for internally developed/fabricated materials, and apply internal version control tracking system
  • Help maintain chemical inventory, and consult with safety teams on chemical waste management
  • Support teams in finding external analytical solutions with commercial materials testing laboratories

Who You Are

  • Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Material Science or a related STEM field

    • Full cell testing and thin film characterization method (e.g. layer density and porosity methods)
    • Laser, confocal and optical microscopy, and SEM
    • Gravimetric analysis and TGA/DSC
    • Ink particle size determination, settling and rheology
  • You are familiar with MEA coating methods such as ultrasonic spray deposition, slot-die or roll-to-roll coating
