Job Title: Scientist/Senior Scientist - Chemistry

Avila Therapeutics
100 Beaver Street
Waltham 02453
www.avilatx.com

Avila Therapeutics™ is pioneering a method to generate and develop new medicines that achieve ‘protein silencing’ based on the proprietary Avilomics™ platform. These medicines, called covalent drugs, strongly and resiliently bond to disease-causing proteins, resulting in therapies that are highly effective against a broad spectrum of human diseases. The covalent bonding mechanism of Avila’s drugs has the unique property of effectively ‘silencing’ disease-causing proteins by establishing a strong and enduring ‘bond’ – exceeding the more temporary ‘binding’ of conventional drugs – to completely shut down the activity of and silence a disease-causing protein. Avila’s covalent drugs have exceptional therapeutic benefits because they are highly targeted, are effective against mutations and have a long duration of action.

Job Description:
Avila Therapeutics is seeking a talented medicinal chemist with the following responsibilities and qualifications:

Responsibilities:
• Design, synthesize, and characterize novel bioactive molecules towards a wide range of novel protein targets, efficiently and independently.
• Integrate and interpret the SAR and identify lead compounds with desirable properties (activity, selectivity, DMPK characteristics, physical properties, etc.).
• Apply structure-based drug design principles and integrate with other experimental data collected in the design of new molecules.
• Work with other chemists (both internally and externally) to solve synthetic challenges, and design novel molecules. Maximize the productivity of the group and provide intellectual input for the department.
• Maintain productive relationships with project team members in all departments: chemistry, biology, pharmacology, cheminformatics, and external collaborators. Communicate progress against goals and propose solutions for emerging challenges in a multidisciplinary setting.

Qualifications:

• PhD in organic or medicinal chemistry with 2-7 years of post-doctoral or industrial experience in chemistry and drug discovery. Demonstrated record of productivity in organic or medicinal chemistry research as evidenced by publications and/or patents.
• In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with a wide range of techniques in synthesis, purification, and spectroscopic characterization of novel compounds (NMR, LC-MS, HPLC etc.). • Experience using the concepts and tools of structure-based drug design and chemical database searching.
• Creative thinker capable of influencing research priorities and project goals.
• Highly collaborative, self-motivated, team-oriented individual capable of collaborating with other disciplines on complex projects and goals.
