Ze‐gen Introduction
Ze‐gen, Inc. is a Boston‐based, privately‐held company providing advanced gasification
technology to convert ordinary waste streams into syngas suitable for multiple industrial and
commercial applications. Ze‐gen has an initial commercial focus on gasification of construction
and demolition waste. The Company has been backed by a global syndicate of top‐tier
institutional investors, and is starting operations of a phase‐two demonstration plant this
summer (July 2009). Ze‐gen is aggressively expanding its team to have the engineering and
business capabilities in place to move into siting, financing and construction of full‐scale
commercial facilities beginning in 2010.
Position Summary
The Vice President of Technology Development will lead Ze‐gen’s LMG technology development
effort and will make a significant contribution to the overall technical direction of the Company.
This individual will report directly to Ze‐gen’s Chief Executive Officer at its Boston area
headquarters.
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned, analytical, chemical process engineer who is experienced
and highly proficient at developing and commercializing new technologies and at building,
managing, and developing a team of highly capable technology developers. The ideal candidate
will thrive in an entrepreneurial environment while instilling discipline and structure in work
processes. This individual will be responsible for fully developing and commercializing Ze‐gen’s
waste gasification technology and extending it to a variety of feedstocks and customer
requirements.
Responsibilities:
• Plan, prioritize, and manage all aspects of the Ze‐gen’s technology development. The
primary focus of this development will be centered on Ze‐gen’s liquid metal gasifier and the
associated unique feed and product removal technologies.
• Quickly build and lead a team of highly competent process developers.
• Implement efficient work processes and establish clear interfaces and deliverables between
the process development group and its customers – primarily the Business Development,
Plant Operations, and Project Engineering groups.
Develop deep expertise in the core technology areas of gasification, metallurgy, gas cleanup,
and other related areas.
• Fully participate as a member of the company's technical executive team, including
leadership of the company’s Scientific Advisory Board.
• Set technical requirements and direction for new products in conjunction with Ze‐gen’s
Project Engineering and Market Development groups.
• Work closely with Ze‐gen’s Plant Operations team to commission facilities, hand‐off ongoing
operations, and support continuous improvement to technology and operating processes.
Qualifications:
• MS in chemical engineering or related degree required, Ph.D. preferred.
• 15+ years experience in chemical engineering process development and people
management including supervision of process development, commissioning, and operations.
• Experience that has included process roles at large established companies and startups.
• Ideal candidate has industry experience as an individual contributor and as a manager of
chemical process technology development and commercialization in the fields of
gasification and metallurgical processes.

environment. Track record of developing and delivering process designs on
time, on budget and with high quality. Institutionalizes work processes that lead to
deliverables and develops plans while minimizing process loss and planning time.
• Executive Management. Experience working with project engineering departments and
business development groups, and has a reputation as a valued team player. Regularly
communicates directly, openly, and honestly, even on "tough" issues. Works collaboratively.
Inspires confidence in a high‐powered executive team, current, and future investors.
• Communication Skills. Highly effective communicator and presenter. Proven ability to
communicate effectively with a range of audiences from highly sophisticated investors to
plant operators and maintenance workers.
• Team Development. Proven ability to hire, retain, and develop a cohesive process team focused on a common set of goals. Capable of planning organizational needs, attracting top
talent, and optimizing/leveraging resources. Works with a team to develop comprehensive
process technology development plans and commits to those plans.
• Technical Capabilities. Displays both breadth and depth of technical knowledge in
fundamentals of chemical and metallurgical engineering. Able to be a technical leader and mentor within the organization. Able to be a highly credible technology spokesperson
among customers and partners, regulators, and investors.
• Market Awareness, Curiosity and Open‐mindedness. Familiar with the latest technical
developments in the renewable energy, gasification, gas clean‐up, emissions and waste
disposal space. Grounds all technical work in market reality. Responsive to Ze‐gen’s defined
marketplace and customer requirements and feedback, and understands the issues
associated with delivering Ze‐gen’s LMG technology to market. Willing to adapt process
strategies in the face of compelling technical or commercial reasons to do so.
