Senior Scientist - Metabolic Engineer
 
Description:
Solazyme has an immediate opening for a Scientist/Senior Scientist in the area of metabolic engineering, particularly as it relates to lipid metabolism. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of metabolic pathways, their organization and assembly as it relates to facilitating substrate competition and channeling as well as the application of genomics and transcriptomics to maximizing carbon flux through desired pathways. An understanding of standard molecular biology techniques is a must as is hands on biochemistry experience relating to lipid metabolism. Applicants with experience in plant or algal systems are particularly encouraged to apply. This is a truly unique opportunity to work in a highly interactive and dynamic environment with organisms that have clearly demonstrated their ability to produce oil at industrial scale.

Responsibilities:

* Apply knowledge gleaned from fermentation, genomic, and transcriptomic data to design strategies aimed at maximizing carbon flux through desired biosynthetic pathways
* Design, and execute experiments aimed at characterizing and localizing biochemical processes
* Present findings and strategies to senior management and fellow scientists in a clear and cogent manner
* Assist in the writing and preparation of research plans for review by corporate partners


Requirements:

* Excellent working knowledge of biochemical pathways, particularly as they relate to lipid metabolism
* Hands on experience in the assessment and application of genomic, and transcriptomic data as they relate to modifying biochemical pathways
* Excellent written and oral communication skills are absolutely essential
* Must be able to lead teams by example
* Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or related discipline
