Solazyme
Postdoctoral Scientist - Cell Biologist

Description:
Solazyme has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Scientist in the area of Cell Biology, particularly as it relates to imaging at the cellular and sub-cellular levels. The ideal candidate will have hands on experience in the utilization of imaging tools to probe sub-cellular localization and architecture as well as organellar physiology and macromolecular trafficking. Candidates should have experience in a wide array of imaging techniques, including FACS analysis, brightfield, fluorescence, confocal and electron microscopy. Candidates should have demonstrated ability in the application of these tools to address fundamental questions of sub-cellular organization, trafficking and localization of macromolecules. Candidates with experience in microbial and plant systems are particularly encouraged to apply. This is a truly unique opportunity to work with novel organisms in a highly interactive and dynamic environment.

Responsibilities:

* Apply knowledge gleaned from fermentation, genomic, transcriptomic and molecular biological data to design and implement strategies aimed at characterizing the sub-cellular organization of lead microbial strains.
* Design, execute and validate experiments aimed at elucidating cis- and trans-acting factors controlling sub-cellular trafficking and localization to various organelles
* Present findings and strategies to senior management and fellow scientists in a clear and cogent manner
* Assist in the writing and preparation of research plans for review by corporate partners

Requirements:

* Excellent working knowledge of cell imaging techniques
* Demonstrated hands on experience in the application of these techniques toward the elucidation of macromolecular trafficking at the sub-cellular level
* Excellent written and oral communication skills are absolutely essential
* Must be able to work in an intense, results oriented environment
* Ph.D. degree in cell biology, molecular biology or related discipline

The successful candidate will have the ability, desire, and motivation to integrate his/her skill set into a dynamic organization that includes pioneering metabolic engineering of microalgae, pilot-scale and large-scale microbial fermentation, hydrocarbon extraction, chemical transformation of biofuels and feedstocks, and delivery of biofuel material to commercial partners.
